Finding the Right Fit
Finding the Right Fit….. I like to……

"Do What You Are" has been a classic career advice book for years – the message was to pick something that fits your personality and you will have a better chance of success. The book is based on the Meyers-Briggs Trait Indicator Assessment tool developed over 60 years ago that still serves as the benchmark for personality assessment tools. There is a simplified version that you can take online at no charge to find out more

The primary objective of the hospitality industry is providing guests with memorable experiences – be it dining, sailing, tennis or golf – in other words, customer service excellence.

A good way to start your job search is to complete the sentence “When it comes to my job, I like to….”

Some questions you might like to ask yourself follow:

  • What do I want to do?
  • What did I like most about my last job?
  • What do I want to do more of in my next job?
  • What is my ideal work environment?
  • What is my preference—to work independently or as part of a team?
  • What amount of traveling am I willing to do?
  • What motivates me?
  • What companies intrigue me?
  • What skills do I have to do a specific job?
  • What skills do I have that I do not use right now?
  • What area could I get more training in, and how long would it take?
  • What do past employers/peers/teachers say are my best attributes?

Whether you are just getting started or are thinking about getting started in the hospitality, it is A Time for Rebirth: Rethink and Refocus Your Career according to Kevin Wheeler, a respected talent management consultant. In brief Wheeler’s advice if you are unemployed (while he is writing for the recruiting industry, the advice applies to all job seekers:

  • The time for job-hopping is over, make sure you are ready to commit to at least a five-year learning and working stint;
  • Try to get a job in that industry in any capacity to learn the business;
  • Don’t let any job search skills you have slip. Stay up-to-date;
  • Stay optimistic. Reflect, learn, volunteer, and stay active in your job search.
