In Transition
In Transition.......between Careers and at the close of a Full Time Career

The recent downturn in the economy has created many challenges for both employers and employees. It left many people in a career transition – either they are no longer employed or are looking for change. Kevin Wheeler presents a different perspective on things and looks at it as a Time of Opportunity – while directed at those in the recruiting industry; there is food for thought for those in a career transition who want to better understand changes coming in the recruiting process. According to Wheeler:

The slow times will pass and recruiting will ramp up almost without warning. Use this time to learn, adopt, examine your own practices, and make the changes you think will make a difference. As we emerge from this recession, the entire recruiting [process] profession will look different, be run differently, use different tools, and be based on different assumptions than it was.

The hospitality and tourism industry is one where there is a lot of transition and employers are consistently on the lookout for the right talent. If you need to upgrade you skills or need a certificate, check out Industry Education .

While it is often easier to change careers while you are still employed, it is not uncommon to consider a transition while you are currently unemployed. A first step is check out Finding the Right Fit, Building a Personal Brand and Marketing Yourself.

As a job seeker you need to present a professional image at all times. This includes the business card that you hand people when you are out networking and interviewing. If you are currently in transition (that is, between employment) you will need a card that quickly and simply tells people who you are. It need not be fancy or complicated. In fact, the less cluttered the better. While you may hear about the need to create a “transitional” business card, check out Dan Schwabel’s blog about how to create a business card as part of your personal branding toolkit.

The transition of millions of the “boomer generation” from full time careers has talent managers scrambling to capture critical knowledge and experience from retiring employees and teach new employees entering the workforce basic skills. Goodbye Boomers, Hello Boomerangs recommends that  boomers be hired as consultants or be given more flexible work arrangements as they approach retirement; they also make great mentors for younger workers entering the workforce. You may want to approach your organization about these and other arrangements as part of your transition out of a full time career.
